Spencer Sutherland – “Grateful” [PREMIERE] – FIRE ROUND: Four Reasons Why
Following the success of his debut EP, NONE of this has been about you, alt-soul crooner Spencer Sutherland is popping up on our radar just in time for Thanksgiving with groovy single “Grateful.” Implicit in the title and fitting for this lovely week in November that reminds us all to be a little more gracious, Sutherland shares why he is thankful from his unique perspective. In his own words,
“’Grateful’ is about celebrating the fact that not being perfect is perfectly okay. I want people to have fun and feel good while listening to this song.”
WE are grateful to have the opportunity to premiere this bop & share with you four reasons why we are feeling Spencer Sutherland’s “Grateful.”
1. First off, forgive my cringey 2019 colloquialisms, but we stan a slapping baseline that not only walks but groooves throughout a track. ’Nuff said. #sorrynotsorry
2. Sutherland’s soulful, robust vocal tone and seamless ease in his performance. Peep the ridiculous riffs that begin at 1:40 and remind us all of his incredible control and expertise in his craft.
3. That deeply gratifying, descending electric guitar lick which makes its first appearance at 1:15 and reoccurs several times, cranking up the funk with each downward slide.
4. The balance between the sanguine sentiment of the song and a realistic outlook on life. From putting off dishes to being broke, Sutherland recognizes his abounding gratitude for the life but doesn’t force feed his listeners a sugarcoated version of reality… as the chorus puts it, “I’m not perfect / But I’m grateful /And that’s just perfect / And that’s me.”
