Kat Leon at the Hi Hat on 11/4

One can argue that the two experiences every human undoubtedly shares are birth and death. It’s interesting to note how uncomfortable these universally shared experiences can make one feel. Whether it be the squirms of high school students witnessing the beauty (or horror) of childbirth in Biology class, or the difficulty we feel in comforting others and expressing ourselves in the face of losing a love one. Ultimately, the vulnerability of the human experience is hard to handle introspectively, let alone discuss freely with others. However Kat Leon, the leading lady of We Found New Music’s favorite Holy Wars, relinquishes this trepidation and revels in the beauty of shared human experiences— tears, smiles, and everything in between.

In 2015 Leon lost both of her parents. A moment we all dread, it goes without saying that on that day Leon’s heart was shattered into a million pieces. Throughout the past four years she has been carefully mending those pieces back together and her method? Music— visceral, honest, and most importantly soul touching music. Though much of Holy Wars’ music is inspired by this same loss, this time Leon departs on our own solo project, digging deeper into these painful emotions that has shaped the artist she is today.

Her debut EP This Is How the World Ends is a testament to strength, and is both cinematic and fearless in nature. Kicking off with title track “This Is How the World Ends,” Leon ushers her listeners in tenderly. She sings “Turning the pages / Been burning the candle / Staring at faces that I’ll never know,” joined by an emotive string section, she gives the listener a safe space to express their vulnerability. “This Is How the World Ends” is accompanied by an equally awe striking music video, featuring Leon performing the single draped in a long red gown, gyrating through the forest.

A gorgeous ode to surviving against all odds, Kat Leon’s solo debut showcases a mature artist, one who has courageously embraced her personal strife and created a masterpiece from the ruins. Take a listen to the heart-wrenching EP below and be sure to check out Kat Leon in all her glory at the Hi Hat on Nov. 4, RSVP HERE!
