“Waiting on Sunshine”– Evenson’s Mesmerizing New Single, a Melting Pot of Diverse Influences
Evenson, a talented artist hailing from Connecticut, has carved out a unique and captivating creative path. His musical style effortlessly weaves together vibrant alt-pop, vintage-funk, and moody rock’n’roll, resulting in a sound that is both eclectic and unforgettable. However, it is the poetic and deeply vulnerable nature of his lyrics that truly sets him apart. In his mesmerizing new single, “Waiting on Sunshine,” he showcases his ability to craft deceptively simple yet profoundly impactful songs.
Evenson’s music is a melting pot of diverse influences, combining elements from various genres to create a sound that is entirely his own. His alt-pop sensibilities infuse his compositions with raw energy and a contemporary edge. At the same time, the vintage-funk influences lend a nostalgic flair to his music, evoking a sense of familiarity and timelessness. With moody rock’n’roll undertones, Evenson adds a raw and gritty quality to his sound, infusing it with depth and emotional intensity. It captures the rush of an initial romantic spark with its infectious, up-tempo sound influenced by Marvin Gaye, Prince, and Magdalena Bay. It joyfully details a first encounter with a woman that Evenson says “felt like we were briefly existing in a cocoon untouched by time and the outside world.” He also adds, “It was a fleeting moment in time that was unshaken by the circumstances of our individual lives. Within that space, there was nothing but our connection. I wanted the song to embody that feeling, and I think we achieved it.” The recording also features a guest appearance from saxophonist Mark Earley, who also appeared on the Evenson 2020 viral smash, “How Can I Sleep.”
Through his introspective approach to songwriting, he invites us into his world, forging a genuine connection. “Waiting on Sunshine,” joins a series of singles that in some way address mental health fragility, both within and without. Evenson is on a mission to change the way men are thought of in the world. “These days, you don’t often see a black artist so open to speaking about emotions and mental health,” he says. “I want to make it acceptable for a black man to be fully present in his vulnerability and sensitivity.” The song includes his unique signature funk rock style. While the song deals with very serious issues, it’s playful and full of energy. Evenson’s approach is very interesting and unique and is a great way to start a conversation about important issues, while also being an enjoyable listen. The song is accompanied by a music video directed by longtime collaborator Jacob Rodier, who shot clips for the previous singles “Pretender,” “If I Ever Feel Better” and “LUNGS.” Professional dancer Sasha Speed and acclaimed choreographer Kristen Stambolic contributed movement and emotional physicality to the video. “It was incredibly fun,” Evenson says, adding with a laugh, “even though my body is still aching from the shoot. In the end, the experience gave me an appreciation for dance and general body movement can help convey the message and story of a song.”
In addition to producing music, Evenson has created a documentary titled Jai Guru Deva, which is inspired by the Beatles’ “Across the Universe,” and written a poem about “being the smallest person in the universe. It’s a means to preserve humility.” Directed by Moldyroom, the film can currently be found on YouTube. He will be releasing his long-awaited EP “Sadly, I Still Love You” this autumn, a project he says will aim to explore “all sides of the human experience and of myself – themes of mental health, identity, and heartbreak.” We will keep a close eye on his EP! Evenson’s music is a breath of fresh air and I personally find it very noble how he uses his craft to put the spotlight on all these touchy subjects that no one else is willing to discuss.
