Maya J’an Turns “blindfaith county” Into an Alt-Pop World Worth Getting Lost In
Alt-pop artist Maya J’an has been steadily rising since the release of her standout single “cul-de-sac,” building serious anticipation for her debut project. Now the wait is finally over. After spending much of her career behind the scenes and following a creative shift sparked by the 2025 Los Angeles fires, she now steps confidently into the spotlight herself with “blindfaith county.”
The EP is out now via Soulpower Records and Warner Records, offering an immersive body of work that fully lives up to the growing hype surrounding it. Through analog instrumentation, layered production, and lyrics that feel both intimate and dreamlike, Maya proves she has far more to offer than a breakout moment.
As a JUNO Award-winning songwriter with credits alongside artists like Justine Skye, SAINt JHN, Pharrell, and Aqyila, she brings years of experience and artistic instinct into “blindfaith county.”
The project opens with “nasty habit,” a slow-burning standout that immediately highlights Maya’s vocal range and airy, almost otherworldly harmonies. She delivers each line with remarkable control and emotion, drawing listeners in from the very beginning. The track sets the mood beautifully for the rest of the project, easing us gently into her world.
Next comes “cul-de-sac,” which still carries the same emotional weight it had when it first arrived. The track acts as a love letter to her Pasadena roots and to the fragments of childhood lost in the 2025 fires. Maya balances intimacy and longing effortlessly, creating a hazy emotional space where standing still can feel safer than moving forward.
“new june” slows the pace, delivering one of the project’s most vulnerable moments. Maya reflects on loss, lingering hope, and the urge to revisit moments we wish had unfolded differently. There’s an intimacy in her performance that gives the song an almost diary-like quality, turning it into one of the EP’s most affecting tracks.
“art of not caring” and “depends” arrive as back-to-back emotional highlights, with “depends” emerging as one of the EP’s most compelling tracks. Its nostalgic indie pop texture and soft acoustic guitar create a dreamy mood reminiscent of the late 90s. Lines like “Thought I’d feel more real with happy pills, didn’t feel nothin” capture the uneasy tension between numbness, anxiety, and the search for clarity in everyday life. It’s easily one of the project’s standout moments.
“pocket knife” ends the EP with a hypnotic burst of alt-pop, driven by a surreal melody and gripping production. Her vocals remain captivating until the very last moment, giving the project a strong and memorable finale.
“blindfaith county” feels like Maya J’an’s most fully realized work to date. Across the EP, she moves through vulnerability, emotional unrest, and quiet introspection, building a hazy world where people cling to hope while searching for connection and comfort.
