Desire, Damage, and the Search for Home on Eli Derby’s “LOVESHY”
On his new EP, “LOVESHY,” Eli Derby falls in love, gets distracted, makes mistakes, regrets them, and ultimately searches for the kind of stability he has struggled to maintain. That tension runs throughout the project as he moves between the excitement of new attractions and a growing desire for something lasting while confronting the choices and patterns that can get in the way of it.
Born in Maryland, Derby is a singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. His music brings together the hip-hop-influenced R&B of the 1990s and 2000s with soul, funk, and instrumentation with a live-performance feel.
The guitar is an important part of his identity, but the lyrics take center stage on this EP. Across its songs, Derby moves between infatuation, desire, vulnerability, and self-reckoning, giving the project a more conflicted emotional perspective than its romantic premise might initially suggest.
Emotional care appears as one form that love can take. On “Who’s There For You,” Derby observes a woman who is used to listening to everyone else’s problems while keeping her own to herself. He does not try to win her over with grand promises; first, he wants to know who takes care of her. Songs such as “Fine As U” and “Pretty Girl Dangerous,” featuring Bri3, show the other side of that connection through immediate attraction, flirtation, and the need to make a move before the opportunity passes. Between those two points, the EP presents romance as attention, desire, and curiosity about another person.
The EP repeatedly returns to the idea of finding a sense of home in another person, most directly on “Feels Like Home.” For Derby, being at home means letting his guard down, breathing, and showing himself without hiding any part of who he is. But the EP also shows how easily he can sabotage the very thing he says he wants.
On “What Then,” he is still in love with an ex who is about to marry another man and believes he could win her back. Even so, he knows that he cheated on her, lied to her, and kept her waiting. On “Fumble,” he admits that he was inconsistent, was too busy chasing other things, and ultimately lost his best friend. “Lost in the Moment” offers a brief escape through a reunion, but that feeling gives way to reality once she leaves and he comes back down.
“LOVESHY” does not offer a neat resolution to Eli Derby’s romantic conflicts. He wants love, stability, and the chance to do better, but the EP does not pretend that wanting to change is enough to undo the choices that came before. Its honesty comes from allowing both sides of him to exist at once, as someone who wants to build something lasting while still learning how not to get in his own way.
