All the Feelings of a Broken Heart on Carina Marie’s ‘Becoming Whole’ EP
Pleasantville, NY native, Carina Marie, is an emerging singer, actor, and songwriter with a passion for entertaining others. A lover of music and theater, her music consists of relatable stories and lessons that will have every listener hooked within the first few seconds.
She is now releasing her EP ‘Becoming Whole’, a five songs music material that is born from a love breakup, which, like all breakups, leads the sufferer to experience a series of emotions, ranging from anger, hatred, and sadness.
Many artists agree that pain is one of the best catalysts for art and the case of Carina is no exception. Raw lyrics, deep melodies, and, above all, real emotions that are easy to identify, make this a golden opportunity for the artist.
In this interview, Carina tells us all about her EP and what’s behind it.
CARINA, WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW A BIT MORE ABOUT YOU. CAN YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO THOSE WHO STILL DON’T KNOW YOU?
Hey! I was born and raised in Pleasantville, New York and I’m now based in NYC. I started releasing my own music back in college when I was studying musical theater and wanted to create something tangible of my own. I have a few singles out but I’m the most excited for this debut EP I am dropping this month!
HOW AND WHEN YOUR PASSION FOR MUSIC STARTED?
My passion for music started at a very young age. My aunt was an incredible musician and composer and taught me how to play the piano very early on in my life. I started writing my own songs shortly after and performing them at my school’s talent shows. It was always a dream of mine to release my own music one day. I can now say that my passion for music is being fueled by the thought of making my younger self proud of what I’m doing today.
WHAT IS MUSIC IN YOUR LIFE?
Music is my therapy. Whether I’m listening, writing, or collaborating, I believe that music is essential to everyday life. Music has been a constant in my life ever since I was a kid. It has been with me through the ups and downs and has gotten me through some pretty difficult days. I hope that my music can do the same for other people who need to feel seen and heard.
TODAY YOU HAVE ‘BECOMING WHOLE’, AN EP OF 5 SONGS. TELL US ABOUT THE ALBUM. WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO DO IT?
Last year I was coping with a terrible breakup. I was completely blindsided and felt like the world was caving in on me. I needed to gain back control of my life so I began to do this through my writing. Writing each song became my therapy and I was motivated to create an EP that would help others recover from heartbreak. I knew if I needed this music, there were plenty of other people that needed it too.
IS THERE AN IDEA THAT CONNECTS TO THE SONGS?
From start to finish, the EP takes the listener on a journey through the stages of a breakup. You’ll catch a hint of all the stages of grief as the music styles change throughout the album. The EP consists of all the emotions one faces during a heartbreak, while ultimately finding oneself again and “Becoming Whole”.
HOW WAS THE PROCESS OF WRITING THE SONGS? CAUSE YOU SAID YOU WROTE THIS EP DURING A VERY VULNERABLE TIME IN YOUR LIFE.
It was honestly tough! I was in a pretty rough headspace while writing this album, but I think it made the music and emotions I put into my vocals and writing even more raw and authentic. I wrote most of the music crying in the bathtub lol. The craziest part about writing this EP was how quickly I wrote it. Immediately after the breakup, I needed to keep my mind busy. I started taking my journal entries and turning them into songs. All five of the songs were written in 4 weeks. I think the writing process was a turning point for me in my career because I realized I am more than capable of busting out some sick tunes in a short period of time. It was very reassuring that I can do this!
OF THE 5 SONGS IS THERE ANYONE YOU FEEL LIKE MORE INTENSE THAN THE REST?
I would have to say “Where You’ve Been” is probably the most intense. Anger isn’t an emotion I feel often but when you listen to this song you can totally feel the anger and the heat I was feeling in this moment. I am super proud of the work my producer/engineer and I put into this song. I think it captures the feeling of anger and pain perfectly.
HERE YOU HAVE THE NAME OF THE SONGS, I WOULD ASK YOU TO WRITE A WORD TO DEFINE EACH ONE:
- WHERE YOU’VE BEEN: Anger
- GAME SHOW: Mistrust
- YOUR PLACE OR MINE: Lust/temptation
- DIFFERENT WAY: Acceptance
- BECOMING HOLE: Growth
HOW DO YOU PROJECT YOUR FUTURE IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACHIEVE?
One of my biggest dreams is to take my music on tour. I want my music to be accessible to everyone everywhere, and I really love the idea of connecting with people on a more personal level all over the world! I also love to travel so seeing the world, meeting cool new people, and performing my own music would be a dream come true.
SOCIAL NETWORKS AND MUSIC PLATFORMS ARE GREAT TOOLS FOR PROMOTION. HOW DO YOU GET ALONG WITH IT AS A MEANS TO MAKE YOUR MUSIC KNOWN?
I try to promote my music on social media as much as possible. In this day in age, music promotion seems a lot simpler with the help of a hundred different social media platforms. I’ve made a lot of new friends, fans, and other artist connections through social media. Sometimes as an independent artist, it seems like I’m screaming into the void but I constantly remind myself that it is all worth it.
WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE TO PROMOTE YOUR EP?
I would love to release a music video for a few of the songs. I would also be so thrilled to take this EP on tour and perform it live as much as possible!
