Aquilo: Never Seen You Get So Low

Most people conflate intimacy with sexuality.  “Never Seen You Get So Low,” by British duo Aquilo, is a reminder that it doesn’t always have to be that way.  Aquilo have constructed a brilliant track using empathy, rather than sexuality, as it’s core.  This is not a song for the club, this is a song for your sad uber home.   With sparse instrumentation centered around an ethereal keyboard melody and a subtle but pulsing beat, Aquilo offer their advice: “You should cut the thread./ Remember when I said/ Bridges can burn for you?/ Wouldn’t you like them to?/ I’ve never seen you get so low./ I’ve never seen you get so low.”  On paper these word come off as an admonishment, but when whisper-sung by Aquilo they take a much gentler tone.  With enough listens, the song’s message shifts from one of despair to one of hope.  Whatever it is that’s bringing us down, whether it be a break up or a bad habit, we can leave it behind. We should all be so lucky to have someone like Aquilo in our lives.

“Never Seen You Get So Low” is the lead track off their EP “Painting Pictures of A War” released this December on Island Records. Follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Soundcloud.
