Beauty School Dropout – “Last Time” – FIREROUND: Four Reasons Why

Beauty School Dropout crash lands on the scene with debut single “Last Time.” A foot-tapping, head-banging, certified bop, BSD presents their spin on a melting pot genre, one they self-coined “renegade pop.” Comprised of members Cole Hutzler (vocalist), Diego Ferrera (guitarist), Mike Rose (drums), Brent Burdett (bass), and Bardo (producer, guitar) the five-piece create a musical experience fit for the 2020 listener.

And with that snazzy intro, four reasons why we are feeling Beauty School Dropout’s “Last Time.”

1. Lead singer Hutzler’s nostalgic vocals, dripping with emotion and sharpened with that distinct post-punk edge.

2. The melodic phrases in the chorus. As Hutzler sings “Hey! / You said that I was just a past time / Wait! / I told you this would be the last time” into “You never take my advice / Pay the price / No I don’t mind / (No I don’t mind.)” Though not ridiculously complex, the melodies are statisfyingly catchy, sweet, and anthemic.

3. That is, anthemic and inspirational, as the repeated chorus feels almost communal– inviting the listeners to share in this moment of self-love, as Hutzler repeats the prior with gusto.

4. Finally, the theme of championing of oneself. So often in the face of mistreatment, we take those negative feelings upon ourselves. BSD encourages you to expel, rather than internalize. To relinquish past pain and say “boy, bye” to the people who’ve hurt you.
