Carly Paige – “summer of nineteen”

Life is comprised of a series of moments. Some are surely more meaningful than others, but as they are happening in real time, they are equal. As days and weeks turn into months and years, we are able to see how these special moments create the plot line of our lives, with all the magical twists and turns that come along the way.

Singer-songwriter Carly Paige captures this sentiment with grace and wisdom beyond her years in newest single “summer of nineteen” (Sept. 13). Though only 21-years-young, Carly already boasts an impressive career as a budding songwriter. Starting in the Los Angeles sessions circuit at 16, she commuted hundreds of miles from her hometown of Glendale, Arizona on a regular basis, finally making the move to the City of Angels at 19. Carly’s writing and features can be heard in the music of Kaskade, 3LAU, Hook N Sling, Fly By Midnight, LöKii, and Betty Who. Releasing a string of singles under her own artist project in 2018, “summer of nineteen” marks her first solo single in over a year and this return might just be ones of those “special moments.”

An anthemic tune from start to finish, the first 10-second intro sounds removed, almost antique in sonic quality. The music cuts, following a burst of production, bringing the listener to one of those landmark moments of the past, the summer Carly’s parents met. Inspired by the idea of meeting someone in a moment but not realizing the significance of that moment until later, Carly ponders her parent’s chance encounter about twenty-eight years ago (give or take).

The significance of the year is minimal while the moment itself, precious. As the track continues, Carly muses on the notion of meeting a life altering force herself this very summer season, with poetic lines such as “Holding my hand like it’s something you’ve always done / Wondering if hello is a loaded gun” and “Butterfly effect from the way that you look at me / Dangerous, yeah baby don’t you think?”

Carly’s vocal tone is pristine and focused as she sings over a driving kick drum and pulsating, lustrous production. An overall hypnotizing effect, the track is both nostalgic and hopeful, understanding the importance of moments past while reeling in the excitement of future pinnacle happenings to come.
