Chasing Dreams and Changing Lives: The Story Behind Nico Tortorella’s “Born.”
Nico Tortorella‘s debut album, “Born.”, marks an intriguing shift for the talented actor, advocate and author. Known for his roles in notable series such as “Younger” and “The Walking Dead: World Beyond,” Tortorella enters the music scene with a serious and eclectic collection of tracks, beginning with the release of his single “Grapefruit.”
The song, a vibrant blend of Nico Tortorella’s passionate vocals and energy, sets the tone for an album that oscillates between playful and profound. Accompanied by a music video directed by Nico’s brother Rocco Tortorella, “Grapefruit” serves as a precursor to the thematic depth and musical diversity present in “Born.”
While starring in Apple TV+’s “City on Fire,” where Nico Tortorella played the leader of the fictional band Ex Post Facto, the artist discovered his inner musician. Contributing original songs to the show’s soundtrack proved transformative and sparked Tortorella’s musical journey.
Reflecting on this experience in an interview with Brooklyn Vegan, music supervisor Jonathan Leahy praised Tortorella’s dedication to vocal performance and noted the remarkable outcome of his recording efforts. This new passion prompted him to delve deeper into his artistic identity, merging the realms of character development and personal introspection within the sanctuary of the studio.
“Born.” is a testament to this journey, with songs written and composed during a pivotal moment in his life: the pregnancy and birth of his daughter, Kilmer Dove, in March of last year.
Originally conceived as a soundtrack to the home birth experience shared with his wife, Bethany C. Meyers, the music took on a life of its own, intertwining with the cosmic dance of parenthood. As Nico Tortorella took on his role as a father, the music blossomed, encapsulating the transition and his evolving experience as a father, a role he considers the most significant.
Tortorella also debuted his first children’s book, “Olivette Is You,” a project that follows closely in the footsteps of his previous works: a poetry collection, “All of it is You” and a memoir, “Space Between.”
Through “Olivette Is You,” Nico Tortorella encourages young readers to embrace his present self, a sentiment that is reflected in his musical adventure and the release of “Born.” With each artistic endeavor, Nico Tortorella invites the audience to celebrate the totality of being.
