Crys Matthews “Cancel Culture” is the protest song we all need
Crys Matthews is set to release a new album Reclamation next year that is filled with irresistible country and folk songs. She shares, “This album is both sonically and ideologically the fullest representation of who I am as an artist and as a human,” she says. A preacher’s kid, a Black woman, a Butch lesbian, and a proud Southerner who sings social justice music right alongside ‘traditional’ country and Americana music.” The most anticipated song on the album “Cancel Culture” has just been released and it captures this important narrative.
“Cancel Culture” discusses so many of the wrongs found in society and how we must cancel those things instead of rights for minorities and children. She sings, “Instead of banning books / I’d ban gerrymandering for good / No more white washing our history / When the truth will set us free.” What sets this song apart, though, is its deep engagement with the political realities of the present moment. While Crys has never shied away from social commentary, here she weaves her activism into the personal more seamlessly than before. The song features stacked acoustic guitars and a stripped-back production to highlight Crys important lyrics and soulful vocals.
Crys Matthews was born and raised in the South and currently lives in Nashville. Her music is powerful and timely and blends a variety of genres. Her ability to balance emotional vulnerability with sharp social critique has always been one of her greatest strengths, and on “Cancel Culture”, she continues to use her platform to challenge the status quo while offering hope for change.
