“Don Político”: The Single That Bridges Languages to Deliver a Powerful Message of Social Justice

Canadian musician and activist Adrian Sutherland has partnered with Brazilian/Mexican actor, singer, and TV host Rodrigo Massa to release Don Politico, a bilingual version of Adrian Sutherland’s original protest song, Politician Man. This powerful anthem calls for an end to hollow politics and prioritizes the people, with a message that aims to resonate from South America to Canada’s northern reaches.

Originally written in response to the contaminated water crisis in Adrian Sutherland’s remote Cree community of Attawapiskat, Don Político expands the song’s reach by introducing Spanish lyrics, making it a cross-border collaboration with universal relevance. The track speaks to the frustration of everyday people facing politicians who climb to power on grand promises, only to neglect the communities they serve. “We need to listen we need to change / We’re sick and tired of the same old games,” the lyrics state boldly, a direct call to action against self-serving leadership.

The inclusion of Rodrigo Massa adds a multicultural dimension to the track. Massa, who performs the Spanish portions, brings his Brazilian roots and Latin American perspective to the song, further bridging the linguistic and cultural divide. This partnership not only amplifies the song’s message but also underscores its theme of unity across borders.

Sutherland’s signature blend of rock, folk, and blues is ever present in Don Político, maintaining his authentic sound while integrating Massa’s dynamic vocals. The song was penned by Sutherland, Chris Gormley, and Matt Gormley, with Spanish translations by Massa. It was recorded in Hamilton by producer Carl Jennings and mastered in Toronto by João Carvalho, ensuring a polished and impactful production.

With Don Politico, Adrian Sutherland and Rodrigo Massa deliver a statement—a call for unity, change, and a reminder of the transformative power of music to cross boundaries and inspire action.
