“I Got the Message” Is Emily O’Neal’s Playful Take on an Awkward Experience

While only being thirteen years old, musician Emily O’Neal began performing and writing songs in her hometown in North Florida. She discovered songwriting as a powerful outlet for expressing her emotions during this time and instantly fell in love with the process. As O’Neal developed her skills as an artist over the years, her own style emerged.

In 2020, Emily O’Neal made the decision to move to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in songwriting and music. This decision was driven by her desire to further perfect her own set of skills at a renowned college while also actively pursuing her music career.

During her time in Nashville, Emily O’Neal experienced remarkable success and gained recognition for her talent. She has opened for pop singer Olivia O’Brien, performed a sold-out show at the Bluebird Cafe where she has been referred to as a “crowd favorite,” and was even awarded a 2021 BMI John Lennon Scholarship for her single “Paint Me.”

With the release of her debut EP titled “Otherworldly” in 2021, Emily O’Neal gave the world a taste of her unique take on music. Audiences quickly embraced her song “Villain,” becoming the featured song on the EP. In July 2023, O’Neal kept the flow of releases with the single “Watercolor,” the tune gained much attention thanks to its emotive lyrics and alluring melodies. Since then, she has planned to release two more singles, leading up to the release of her highly anticipated debut album titled “Bird’s Eye View.” The genre-bending “I Got The Message” is one of those singles and the last one we’re getting before her debut album.

“I Got The Message” is a musical rollercoaster ride where O’Neal expresses her embarrassment at an awkward situation in a fun way. She is taking this opportunity to present a playful outtake of a strange situation and showcase her ability to transform personal experiences into captivating music. Taking elements of funk, pop, and even country, Emily O’Neal has managed to create a delightful song. With vocal work similar to Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, and Fiona Apple, she delivers a catchy and memorable tune. 

“I Got The Message” is a reminder to embrace life’s awkward moments and use them to create something special. O’Neal worked alongside producer Jeb, drummer Devon VonBalson of Flipturn, pedal steel player Jacob Dillard, and keyboardist Shane Spurgeon to create this spunky track that keeps you on your toes about what might come next.

Emily O’Neal’s unique blend of heartfelt lyrics and catchy melodies has already gained her a dedicated fan base and much attention from the press as she continues to be a promising artist on the rise. With “Bird’s Eye View” scheduled for release on May 24th, featuring 10 tracks that explore themes such as love, spirituality, and perspective, she is poised to continue making an impact on the music industry and leave a lasting mark on her listeners.
