Late Again Releases Haunting “Migraine Fever Dream”
Brooklyn-based artist Rafael is unleashing his restless spirit on “Migraine Fever Dream,” the latest EP from his solo project, Late Again.
Inspired by the vibrant energy of his adopted city, the music blends dream pop textures, indie rock vibes, and rhythms that pay homage to his Brazilian heritage. This EP doesn’t fit neatly into one genre; it thrives in the space between genres, just like the artist himself.
The EP kicks off with the immersive soundscape of “Flood,” the debut single. This melancholic track, drenched in icy synths and a downcast melody, explores the quiet realization that a relationship is fading away. Rafael combines ethereal effects, a distinct bass line, and deep vocals, giving it a hint of trip-hop. The lyrics capture the bittersweet acceptance of impermanence, a feeling that’s like a mysterious blend of carrying the weight of the inevitable while finding inner peace.
A shift in mood takes place with “Everything, Nothing,” Late Again’s second single. An ethereal synth sets the stage for a chill melody that perfectly complements the introspective lyrics. “I need something, I need everything, and I’m scared to death everything won’t be enough” says the artist at the time he encapsulates the existential angst felt by a generation adrift.
This track showcases the more melodic side of Late Again, with deeper synths and the addition of the flügelhorn, adding new textures to the musical landscape. Rafael confronts the fear of not measuring up that hides beneath the surface of ambition.
The EP takes a sharp turn with “People Pleasers,” a collaboration with the visionary Brazilian artist Arthur Verocai (known for his work with BadBadNotGood, Hiatus Kaiyote, and Gal Costa). This track bursts with contemporary energy while still carrying a nostalgic vibe.
Verocai’s string arrangements intertwine with trippy synth lines, creating a unique sonic tapestry. The straightforward lyrics delve into the anxieties of a social butterfly trapped at a party they desperately want to escape.
The song’s arrangement itself embodies this internal conflict, aiming to capture the experience of “someone who doesn’t know how to dance… dancing.”
“Migraine Fever Dream” is a must-listen for those who appreciate music that defies categorization. Rafael’s ability to seamlessly blend genres creates a captivating soundscape that is both beautiful and unsettling. The lyrics dive into the complexities of belonging, self-doubt, and the insatiable human longing for connection.
This EP isn’t about finding easy answers; it’s a journey through the mind of an artist in search of a place to call home, both physically and emotionally. Perhaps, the true beauty lies in the very act of searching, exploring a world of sound and emotion that is as unique and multifaceted as Rafael himself.
