Perlo – Day By Day
I was so happy to see that this song was released and absolutely floored when I heard it. Perlo is finally back with their new single “Day By Day” and it’s another beautiful piece from this talented duo. The last release from Perlo was in 2016 with their EP “Patterns” and it remains one of my favorite folk records. On that EP the duo, Henri Bardot & Marie Hsiao (Mree), created a delicate atmosphere of vocal layers & strings that felt nostalgic & familiar. Now, “Day By Day” takes everything that made “Patterns” special and evolves it brilliantly to exist in today’s indie-pop space. The production is sparse, but creates that same familiar atmosphere with vocal & synth layers, short-bowed strings, a shaker, and a huge 80’s-style snare. Once again the duo’s voices blend perfectly when they sing together, but this song also plays out like a true duet. Henri & Marie each sing independently, from different perspectives, which pays off in a powerful way with the call-and-response nature of the chorus. “Day By Day” is an exciting new direction for Perlo that still feels beautifully familiar and I’m really looking forward to hearing whatever comes next from them!
