Phoebe Katis Shines With “Kindred Lover,” a Self-Love Anthem With an Unexpected Musical Twist

Phoebe Katis’ latest single, Kindred Lover, is a heartfelt nod to the golden age of pop. With echoes of the 90s and early 2000s, this vibrant track showcases the British-born, NYC-based singer-songwriter’s unique style and boundless energy. The song takes listeners on an unexpected journey, featuring a captivating saxophone solo by the talented Sam Greenfield that adds a jazzy flair to the upbeat rhythm.

As the second release from her upcoming 2025 album, Kindred Lover captures the essence of Phoebe’s fresh, optimistic sound. Her ability to channel the magic of pop legends into a modern, feel-good anthem highlights her versatility and deep appreciation for the genre’s rich history. This album promises to further cement Phoebe as a standout voice in today’s music scene, blending nostalgia with a contemporary edge.

Despite its lively, polished final form, Phoebe admits the creative process for Kindred Lover was not without challenges. A prolonged creative block temporarily stalled its development, but the breakthrough came when she discovered the deeper message she wanted to convey. “‘Kindred’ Lover started as a typical fun light-hearted love song, the first line being ‘didn’t see you coming, then you took my breath away’. But as I continued to figure out the lyrics, I realized I needed something different from this tune. Those first impressions don’t always work out, as I’ve experienced all too many times, and the only person left at the end of it all to pick up the pieces is you. Clichés are cliché for a reason: everyone needs a confidence boost when getting back up from a breakup. This song turned into something I would want to tell myself in those moments: A first thing in the morning, singing to yourself in the mirror, confidence booster-kind-of-song. You are your own Kindred Lover,” she shares.

Kindred Lover has made waves, debuting at #1 on Spotify’s Nu-Funk editorial playlist and holding a spot in the Top 3 for two consecutive weeks. It also earned a feature on Tidal’s New Arrivals: Pop. The single, which Phoebe describes as “indie R&B feel-good bop with an infectious groove,” is accompanied by a music video that celebrates girl power with a high-energy, all-female dance team inspired by the Spice Girls.

Kindred Lover follows the success of Phoebe’s Good Days, which garnered over 380,000 TikTok views and received airtime on BBC Introducing by Radio 1 DJ Abbie McCarthy.

Phoebe Katis’ career has been a journey of reinvention and growth. Since gaining recognition in 2014 for her work on the award-winning film Kilo Two Bravo, she has continuously explored new genres and styles. With five albums under her belt, Phoebe has graced iconic venues like Ronnie Scott’s in London, the Troubadour in Los Angeles, and prestigious festivals like Glastonbury and the Montreal Jazz Festival.

Phoebe Katis emphasizes authenticity and genuine connection with her audience. “There really is no other greatest feeling in the music industry than to play to a room of attentive listeners. Be that a room of 25, 250, or 25,000 if those fans choose to come to your show and listen to your music when there is so much music out there to choose from,” she says. This commitment to honesty and artistry sets her apart, ensuring her place in an ever-competitive music landscape.
