P’aris: Focus feat. WILLA
Electropop duo P’aris released their newest single “Focus” featuring vocals from WILLA earlier this month. Sparking synths and deep electro bass contrast the melancholy tone of the lyrics. From the band:
“Focus’ is a song about love and loss. There’s a very particular type of gentle empathy that both partners must offer each other when experiencing a loss within the family. People handle grief in different ways, so it’s important to be sensitive to the needs of your partner, while at the same time making sure you’re dealing with your own emotions. ‘Focus’ is about making sure the relationship doesn’t suffer while you’re each processing things in your own way.”
Admittedly, the song feels more upbeat and positive and highly danceable, despite the lyrics being about grief. WILLA’s vocals here remind me of FKA Twigs, soft yet powerful and emotionally charged. It seems the lyrics were purposely juxtaposed with the music as P’aris has the song hashtagged as “#emo synthpop” on Soundcloud, showing that sometimes a bit of playful humor can help ease times of grief.
