The Timeless Melancholy of “Throw Away the Key” by Last Relapse

“Throw Away the Key,” the new single by Last Relapse, carries an unmistakable sense of nostalgia from the very first second. Its intense guitar riff and production evoke the soft rock of the 70s and 80s and give the song a melancholic, velvety feel, almost as if it were unfolding in another era.

That familiar feeling, which invites listeners to revisit emotions they already know, takes on even greater meaning when they learn the story behind the track. David Holding, the band’s vocalist and the song’s writer, had written it roughly a decade earlier, when he was just 16, after being kicked out of a heavier rock band that expected more screaming and less melodic singing.

In search of a place where he could truly fit in, Holding picked up the guitar and taught himself to play, with his first original composition taking shape through its strings. That song was “Throw Away the Key.”

The lyrics, which contrast with the timeless quality of the music, were inspired by what he was going through with his girlfriend at the time. The song holds onto the frustration, confusion, and raw honesty of that formative period in his life.

“Looking back, it’s kind of crazy that a song I wrote at 16 ended up becoming the starting point for a band that would still be part of my life 20 years later,” its composer recalls.

For the Atlanta-based band, bringing this track back means returning to its roots after a long hiatus. Between 2006 and 2012, Last Relapse played more than 200 shows and released the album “Machine.” After 13 years away, the band resumed its activities and released a five-track EP in November 2025.

That comeback continues with “Throw Away the Key,” a song that seems to inhabit several moments in time at once. It carries the uncertainty of someone just beginning to discover love, the distance of someone able to look back, and a sound that invites listeners to linger for a while, remembering their own stories.
