UPSAHL – “Wish You’d Make Me Cry”
Taylor Upsahl may be only 20 years young but her breadth of talent is far beyond her years. The Arizona native packed her bags and hightailed it off to Los Angeles in 2017, signing with Universal Music Publishing Group and immersing herself in the LA songwriting scene. In that time her craft flourished, penning over 200 songs in a year and learning more about herself as a songwriter and human being than ever before. Whether Taylor realized it or not, she was arduously paving the path for her very bright future.
A label deal with Arista led to the release of smash single “Drugs,” followed by her debut EP titled Hindsight 20/20. In what seems like a blink of an eye, Taylor carefully crafted her extension of self and artist persona UPSAHL, the newest force to be reckoned with in pop music. Bringing us to this beautiful Friday morning, July 26 marks the release of single “Wish You’d Make Me Cry.”
A breathe of fresh air from the sickeningly sweet love songs that consistently infiltrate pop music, “Wish You’d Make Me Cry” chronicles those guilty feelings of wanting your significant other to be, you know, just a tad more mean. In her her own words,
“‘Wish You’d Make Me Cry’ is about being with someone who is so good to you that it almost seems fake. When I wrote this song with Pete Nappi, I was caught up in that feeling, so I started just venting to him about it. At one point, I think I said something along the lines of ‘I just wish that he would make me cry’. We wrote the song within an hour after that.”
Tears of joy over this pop gold melody are the only ones the listeners will be shedding, “Wish You’d Make Me Cry” is as catchy as it is cutting. A bass groove that slaps with fierce intention ushers us in as UPSAHL shamelessly admits, “When I’m getting bored, I start some drama.” The production drops in the pre-chorus only to return with fury in the chorus. The refrain is an ear worm of a hook, heavy with electronic flair and manifesting a swagger only UPSAHL could execute properly.
In celebration of the release, UPSAHL is kicking off a string of summer dates across the U.S., taking the stage at Lollapalooza and performing alongside Young the Giant and Fitz and The Tantrums in Arizona, before joining Tessa Violet on tour throughout August and September.
